Gambling Harm Awareness Week

+ Add to my Calendar

Harmful gambling can affect all aspects of a person's life - including their workplace.

People who have harmful gambling behaviours may be stressed and distracted, making them unable to work to their full potential.

Approximately 250,000 New Zealanders experience harm from their gambling. That's the population of Napier, Hastings, Gisborne and Rotorua combined, so it's likely there will be someone in your workplace in this situation.

Gambling Harm Awareness Week runs from September 3-9, so September is the perfect time to highlight the harm that can come from gambling.

The year's theme is about "Whānau Fun". It focuses on encouraging concerned family members, workmates and friends to spend time with someone who's gambling to protect them from harm. Whether it's sharing kai, talking, going somewhere new or doing something new, workmates can be the difference.

Gambling can start out as entertainment but it can become harmful. You can use this week, and this month, to remind your people to check in with friends and whānau. You could encourage people to take a quiz to test their own gambling, or someone else's.

Keep an eye on the Choice Not Chance website to see what's planned for 2017 and follow its Facebook page for ways to get involved.

If you or someone you know needs help now, call the Gambling Helpline on 0800 654 654.
